Tech Corner

Being more “dangerously inquisitive” than “technically adept”, I was pleasantly surprised by the amazing turnout at the Tech Session hosted by our friends at Porsche
of Melbourne (POM) on Saturday, February 9th. Approximately 50 of our members viewed the unmasked underbellies, suspension assemblies, and open engine compartments of Porsche’s current model line-up: Carrera, Cayman, Cayenne and Boxster.

Of special interest was the chance to see the power plants of a Cayman S and Boxster, which typically live out their lives sealed from their owners’ view. With the
covers removed and a 997 Carrera hoisted high on the lift, Space Coasters were able to see the art of engineering up close – years of perfecting the routing for steering,
exhaust, cooling, drive trains, and fitting it all in a compact package. There is no unused space.

Porsche of Melbourne’s service team headed by Richard Suarez and supported by Sabrina Burroughs, Andy Kinner, Steven Finberg, Mike Steele, Jesse Lim and Patrick Wynter provided the guided tours of each vehicle, while Sales Manager Horst
Seibert, along with Owner & General manager Shay Rowe, assisted in answering questions from the crowd. In one of the day’s highlights, two airbags that had registered “faulty” on Porsche’s computeri z e d d i a g n o s t i c s were “detonated”. Although we were asked to stay a comfortable distance from the cage which held
the airbags, in an actual emergency one’s face would be only inches away. After a NASA-like countdown (and a slight delay) the airbags exploded violently with a jarring bang. Someone noted dryly that the sharp sound would be somewhat masked by
the noise of the crash that triggered the airbag’s deployment. Hmmmm?

After a couple of hours pouring over the details of the vehicles and perusing the vehicle inventory, a catered box lunch was served in the sales center where
their new Premier Dealer obelisk was proudly displayed. After lunch their new DSP 600 computerized suspension alignment thingy – I told you that I’m no “Techie
Techington” – was offered to anyone with an interest…and an extra hour or so. All in all: another nice day, with the SCR.

Thanks
Porsche of Melbourne, for hosting another great event!
